The name 'koeksisters' (cook-sisters) originates from the Dutch word 'koekje' which means 'cookie'. A koeksister is a like a donut except it's braided/plaited, deep fried and dipped in syrup. They are time-consuming but they are certainly worth it. Koeksisters can be found in many grocery stores in South Africa as well as at fairs and flea markets. They are a South African delicacy for sure.

Soetkoekies (sweet cookies) are a traditional Afrikaans biscuit or cookie. The cookie is a blend of almond, port and spices. Very tasty.
The ingredients are flour, brown sugar, salt, egg, butter, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and port (or sweet sherry or Madeira). I used Madeira.
